Children's Literature: An Overview (Live Online)

Learn the origins of folktales and nursery rhymes, the social influences that affected how children and their literature were perceived, and a chronology of British and American authors and their works through the centuries.

Description:

The first half of this two-part class covers the rich history of children's literature, from oral tradition to the Harry Potter phenomenon. Learn the origins of folk tales and nursery rhymes as well as the social influences that affected how children and their literature were perceived by British and American authors through the centuries.

The second half of the class covers the genres and formats that define children's literature. Each genre and format will be defined and exemplified by authors and titles. The class also discusses numerous children's literature awards and covers resources to increase your knowledge of children's literature and broaden patron service.

Intended Audience:

This class is geared to staff new to children's literature.

Notes:

Please note that registrations for this class must be received at least one week prior to the class date. Registrants should receive an email offering detailed login and set-up instructions. Please call the Educational Services Department at 800.999.8558 if you do not receive this email at least three days prior to the class. This course is designed for individual participation; each individual must register.
